Mark Bittman on Eating Meat

In this video, Mark Bittman explains that the most important thing we can do to help the environment—more than eating locally, organically, or whatever—is to eat less meat. According to Bittman the USDA requirements are influenced by the dairy and beef industry, are way too high. Adults only need 1/2 pound of meat a week, and the average American eats half a pound a day. He also explains the effect of all of the animal protein on our health. An important reminder for those of us in the middle of the holiday season.

The video includes a short, fascinating history of American cooking.

Even though I consider my family to be semi-vegetarian,  we eat considerably more meat the recommended amount. What about yours?

You inspired me, Hannah. Was about to figure out what other meat I should make to go with leftover chicken soup tonight (our favorite pre-fast food). Your reminder from Bittman made me realize that a little chicken can be part of our meal, and I’ve just thrown together some veggies and some whole grains and I think we have more than enough.

  2. TED rocks. We’re TED addicts in this house. and I’ve written to Mark Bittman to do feature on shakshuka. Still waiting

  3. A half pound a DAY is what most Americans eat? Wow! We only eat meat once during the week (maybe, if I remember to buy it. It’s really my husband’s preference. I would be find with a more vegetarian diet), and then on Shabbos and Yom Tov we have one meat dish per meal.

I want to be a locavore. Working on it. 🙂
